Visions (A Film Trip Into Your Mind) (1975)

Visions was a package of 16mm independent animations, primarily in a psychedelic mode, compiled and distributed in 1975 by Voyage Productions out of Santa Ana, California. I became aware of this package when first working on the collection of Adam Beckett, because Adam had produced title sequences for this package in 1975. As listed on the poster below, Carl Stone is credited as doing the sound for Adam’s title sequence(s), but Carl himself has no recollection of this and thinks Adam probably just used some existing sound of his from the production of Evolution of the Red Star, the film of Adam’s that Carl had done music for.

Voyage Productions is also a name attributed to the release of Fantastic Animation Festival, another touring package of animated films circulated in 1977, and featuring a lot of content overlap with Visions. Fantastic Animation Festival seems to have been produced/compiled by Dean A. Berko and Christopher Padilla, so it’s possible these two people were also responsible for Visions.

Visions was billed as “A Film Trip Into Your Mind”, and contained the following films and program text. The program order is likely as follows, but not 100% confirmed:

LIGHT by Jordan Belson, 7m
A SHORT HISTORY OF THE WHEEL by Loren Bowie, 2.5m
CLOSED MONDAYS by Will Vinton & Bob Gardiner, 8m

There’s a new kind of cinema being explored by artists that’s been phrased as “The Expanded Cinema” or “The New Kinetic Art.” With tools such as synthesizers, computers, animation and other special effects, the artist is able to create worlds that before could exist only in the imagination of the mind. VISIONS was designed for giving stimulating and unique entertainment to all types and ages by appealing to their imagination, sense of humor and love for beauty.
