Because of the sheer size of Robert Todd’s filmography, each year’s titles are grouped in alphabetical order, and do not necessarily reflect the order in which the films of a given year were made.
Rob often mixed black and white negative with color negative in his filmmaking, or even printed entirely black and white films on color stock in some instances. In both scenarios, he would frequently strive for a slight (and sometimes varying, from sequence to sequence) color tonality in the monochrome imagery. As a result, the definitive designation below of a film to be “black and white” or “black and white and color” is somewhat ambiguous, since sometimes films incorporating (or fully made of) black and white imagery were nevertheless deliberately printed onto color stock for slight tonal effect. I have tried to present this information as accurately as possible. (For example, Matters of Life and Death is shot entirely on black and white, but intended to be printed on color print stock, so I’ve noted it as a “bw on color” film.)
In terms of formats, Rob had essentially three types of films:
Works shot and finished on film: Usually shot on 16mm and finished as a 16mm cut negative to make prints. Sometimes he used Super 8 as well, and it would be blown up to 16mm in this process.
Works shot on film but finished digitally: Rob would generally edit on the computer, and then have his negative matched to make prints. Because he was so incredibly prolific, it seems that sometimes he didn’t have his negatives cut for some films — possibly just as an economic decision — and finished them only as digital files. A close friend of Rob’s told me that he had a sense that Rob would send out previews of his latest films to programmers/festivals, and depending on which films seemed to generate interest, this would influence which ones he would then actually get the negative cut and printed for.
Purely digital works: Rob also shot a number of digital pieces, and these works were distributed solely digitally. Some of these pieces incorporate digitized film footage as well.
Rob also produced found footage digital works, perhaps more as a humorous editing exercise and not necessarily meant to be exhibited, but these films are included in this filmography as well, wherever possible.

This film was made by striking high contrast black and white duplicate negatives from a color print element. These hi-con negs were then printed as A/B/C rolls through respective red, blue, and yellow filters to achieve a print with shifting colors.
